Updates

Result: Como 4-1 Manchester United — Nico Paz shining bright

The first edit of this post said, “Nico Paz, 22, has been so much fun to watch for Como and the UEFA Champions League should be a great stage for him. Paz scored three of his four career Argentina goals over the most-recent international break.”

Then he went and scored a second-minute stunner, cutting by Harry Maguire to send an arrow into the goal. He was involved again early in the second half, slipping Anastasios Douvikas toward goal for 2-0. He’d add a third goal in the 57th minute after a huge error from substitute Carlos Baleba.

  • Jacobo Ramon also scored for Como, who took 4-0 lead.
  • Joshua Zirkzee came off bench to score off a feed from fellow sub Amad Diallo.
  • Matthijs De Ligt started and played 79 minutes in first game back from injury.
  • United fall to 1W-0D-2L in first three league phase games.
  • Como improive to 2W-0D-1L.

Result: Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal — Rice, Kane star as Gunners worried by Saka injury

A good start for Arsenal and Bayern Munich in terms of the spectacle, but the game lost a star after just 10 minutes as Bukayo Saka suffered a leg injury and been replaced by Eberechi Eze.

The good news for Arsenal? Eze found the back of the goal with a goal initially ruled offside.

Bayern answered through Alphonso Davies off a brilliant long pass from Harry Kane, and Kane then won and converted a second-half penalty to give the Bavarians a lead at the hour mark.

But hold on — another England star crafted an equalizer. Declan Rice beat Manuel Neuer between the right glove and leg after substitute Viktor Gyokeres did so well to flick the ball with gigantic Jonathan Tah all over his back.

Elsewhere... Mbappe, ex-Leipzig star Diomande extend Real Madrid lead

The dam’s broken at the Bernabeu, where a 2-0 Real Madrid lead heading into the final 10 minutes is now 4-1 to the hosts.

Kylian Mbappe’s 73rd Champions League goal moves him within 17 goals of fourth-place on the all-time list (Karim Benzema).

Then Yan Diomande, who set up Mbappe’s goal, got Real’s fourth.

GOAL! Declan Rice makes it 2-2 as Arsenal level in Munich

Eze has been so bright for Arsenal after being yanked at halftime over the weekend in the Premier League.

He wins a free kick on the chalk of the 18, though the ref pulls it back a yard or two.

The chance comes from the front left edge, and Arsenal are crying for a handball penalty of their own as Martin Odegaard’s service hits something in a sea of bodes.

No luck.

Declan Rice, however, gets some luck a few minutes later.

Harry Kane buries his penalty and Bayern lead Arsenal

The comeback is complete as Harry Kane’s stuttering run-up ends with a shot into the roof of the goal.

The ball more or less crosses as the match clock his 60:00, and Arsenal have a half-hour to wrestle a positive result back from the Bavarians.

Bayern Munich penalty and there’s little hope for VAR help

Konrad Laimer bursts around the right flank and cuts the ball back toward the spot.

Harry Kane is there and his shot is headed for the empty goal when it hits the arm of a sliding Timber.

Big save by David Raya to keep it 1-1 in Munich

Kane is at it again, driving play through the heart of Arsenal.

He finds Serge Gnabry on the right, who crosses to the back post.

Dayot Upamecano is way up field and rises to head home but David Raya’s hands stay strong with a leaping save to keep things 1-1.

One change at the break of Bayern Munich 1-1 Arsenal

It’s a Bayern Munich change to start the second half, with Jonathan Tah replacing Min-jae Kim next to Dayot Upamecano in the Bavarians back line.

Arsenal kept 56% possession in the first half and a 6-5 edge in shot attempts but xG favors Bayern 0.82-0.58.

Villa doing the job against underdog Viking

Ross Barkley continues his renaissance with a goal and Emiliano Buendia is also on the score sheet as Villa are within 45 minutes of a 3-0 record to start the league phase.

This is a Viking side that took a point off Bayern Munich last time out in a 3-3 draw, so Unai Emery will not be calling this fait accompli.

Halftime of 3pm ET UEFA Champions League kickoffs

Aston Villa 2-0 Viking

Bayern Munich 1-1 Arsenal

Club Brugge 1-0 Lens

Inter Milan 0-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

Real Betis 0-0 Feyenoord

Real Madrid 1-0 RB Leipzig

Sporting Lisbon 1-1 LASK Linz

Como 4-1 Man United — FT

Lille 2-4 Galatasaray — FT

GOAL! Alphonso Davies equalizes for Bayern versus Arsenal

Harry Kane gets the ball at midfield and sends a perfect ball behind Jurrien Timber for Alphonso Davies to take into the box.

The Canadian belts his shot past David Raya, and the feed typifies one of the reasons Kane may win the Ballon d’Or. He’s a complete playmaker.

1-1 after 35 minutes.

Bruno Fernandes speaks out on tactics, pressing after Man Utd loss

Bruno Fernandes has been speaking afetr Manchester United’s 4-1 loss to Como in Italy, and he’s questioned the decisions of Michael Carrick.

“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave a little bit of space in-behind and trying to get the ball in the first moment, to wait for them, to give them the ballbut sometimes when you give too much of the ball to these teams they get confidence. They have so many bodies behind the ball they make you run a lot, make people get frustrated and when you recover the ball, the legs and the brain are much more difficult to make it work.”

Eberechi Eze scores... but is he offside? No! 1-0 to the Gunners

Eberechi Eze thought he beat the last man with a perfectly-timed run, then carried down the left flank before beating Manuel Neuer.

The offside flag was raised, but the reviee shows that Eze was onside and Arsenal lead 1-0 in the 26th minute.

Bukayo Saka limps off early at the Allianz Arena

Arsenal will have massive concerns after one of their stars of this early season, Bukayo Saka, limps off very early.

Saka was holding his upper leg after making a pass, and he’s left the game in the 10th minute for Eberechi Eze.

Joshua Zirkzee pulls one back for Man United

Subs combine as Amad Diallo’s cross finds the outstretched leg of a just onside Joshua Zirkzee.

The Dutchman does well to collect the ball and snap it home to ruin Como’s clean sheet just before stoppage time.

There’s a VAR review for a potential offside in the build-up to the goal. The answer does not come quickly but the goals stands in Italy.

Another Como goal as Red Devils getting rocked in Italy

The Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia is electric and Man United are already on the plane home, at least it seems.

Substitute back Kaiki flies down the left and cuts a cross into traffic with Mazraoui well off the pace.

Maguire and Baleba are even further off the play and Ramon is alone outside the six to power a header past Lammens.

Awful. 4-0 to Como.

GOAL! Nico Paz *again* as Como running riot

Manchester United look so, so poor, and it’s difficult not to point to the midfield.

Baleba gives the ball to Nico Paz and Youri Tielemans cannot reach the striding Paz, who beat Lammens for 3-0.

GOAL! Como 2-0 Manchester United: Douvikas

Mostly one-touch passing dissects Man United, as the Red Devils now trail by two.

Nico Paz is given room to operate by Maguire, who cannot adjust his feet quickly enough to stop a through ball from reaching Anastasios Douvikas.

The in-form Greek forward had drawn De Ligt one way and cut another, giving himself just enough room to beat Lammes and double Como’s advantage.

Carrick makes two Manchester United subs at the break

Carlos Baleba takes the place of Santos, as we expected, who was on yellow.

Matheus Cunha exits in favor of Amad Diallo.

Let’s see how much of a difference it makes for Man United.

Halftime: Como 1-0 Man Utd, Lille 2-2 Galatasaray

Como’s 1-0 lead came in the second minute and it’s held up — if anything, Cesc Fabregas’ visitors could have a multi-goal advantage.

Big halftime for Michael Carrick.

Over in France, a second-minute goal led to three more.

Soriba Diaoune has brace for Lille, as the Guinean leveled the match at 1-1 and put the Ligue 1 side up a goal before Russia’s Aleksey Batrakov restored level terms into halftime.

Stats don’t make for great Manchester United reading

Como lead and remain on more than 65% possession into the 33rd minute.

Shots remain 2-2 with a combined 0.15 expected goals total.

Andrey Santos is on a yellow card and Mason Mount is not a midfield commander. Carlos Baleba could be required to bring some steel sooner rather than later.

Half-chances at both ends as Man Utd bid for equalizer

Bryan Mbeumo sweeps a hard cross into traffic and Maguire deals with Jacobo Ramon enough to pop a header toward the far corner, missing wide.

To the other end, where Como look to double their lead but see a bounding shot unable to defy Lammens.

Still 1-0 Como, now into the 20th minute.

What’s in the early-kickoff water? Lille, Gala trade goals inside of 10 minutes

Yunus Akgun gave Turkish powers Galatasaray a second-minute lead in France but Lille hit right back,

The eighth minute saw Alexsandro Ribeiro find Soriba Diaoune to level the score at 1-1.

Lunchtime viewing in the United States proving plenty worth it.

NICO PAZ, WOW — Como strikes early against Manchester United

Moments after Diogo Dalot caps an intensive start from Man United by just missing what would’ve been a very nice goal, Como star Nico Paz does the opposite at the other end.

Harry Maguire is caught flat-footed by a cut move and Nico Paz swirls a gorgeous shot past Senne Lammens for 1-0 in the second minute.

Como confirmed team news, starting lineup

No Trevoh Chalobah nor Moise KEane for Como, as both are a couple of weeks away from returning to Cesc Fabregas’ team.

Milla
Perrone
Da Cunha
Paz
Baturina
Douvikas

Matthijs de Ligt makes his long-awaited return to the team and will play with Harry Maguire, Diego Dalot, and Noussair Mazraoui in an experienced back three.

Bruno Fernandes, Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Mason Mount also start along with Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

Veteran options amongst the subs are quite limited.

Bench: Darlow, Heaton, Amass, Armer, Kamason, Baleba, J. Fletcher, T. Fletcher, A. Diallo, Lacey, Thompson, Zirkzee.

Man United without bevy of players as we await lineup

Here’s who won’t be in Man United’s starting lineup today (actual lineup moments away):

Kobbie Mainoo
Luke Shaw
Marcus Rashford
Lisandro Martinez
Ayden Heaven
Benjamin Sesko
Ayden Heaven

Leny Yoro

All are injuries aside from Yoro, who was shown a red card in United’s last match.

What’s at stake Wednesday on the UEFA Champions League table?

Five teams including Arsenal and Aston Villa are bidding to join PSG and Liverpool as 3-0-0 teams after three matchdays.

Villa could go top with a three-goal win and second with any win, as their +7 goal differential trails only PSG’s +9.

Sporting Lisbon (+4), Arsenal (+4), Real Madrid (+2), and Real Betis (+2) are also 2-0-0.
