Thierno Barry’s 49th-minute goal was enough for Everton to take two points off Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Monday.
The Toffees leapfrog their hosts and move seventh on the table with 13 points, six place and two points clear of Newcastle.
The Toffees handled the Magpies at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday in the League Cup and make it a cup and league double with control in the first half and stout defending in the last 15 minutes.
- Toffees go seventh with 13 points, leapfrogging now 13th-place Newcastle.
- Thierno Barry flubs in-tight chance off Everton free kick in first half, but Barry taps home after Tyrique George’s shot squirts under Lukas Hornicek in 50th minute.
- Joelinton blazes by the bar before halftime
- Yoane Wissa gets two good chances in second half but cannot find the goal.
- Jacob Ramsey gets two yellow cards in stoppage time.
- What’s next? Everton host Coventry City at 3pm ET Friday and Newcastle go to Fulham a day later at 10am.
Tarkowski on a big one: “Probably our best of the season to be honest. Could’ve scored 2 or 3 in the first half and finally scored in the second.”
Tarkowski on Thierno Barry: “He’s harsh on himself at times and I’m trying to praise him up. His numbers are good for distance, holding the ball, and getting in the box plus the important one of scoring goals.”
Barry on his variety of celebrations: “Like I said, I want to enjoy it more than last season. I enjoy my celebrations.”
Newcastle’s subs has committed two hard fouls in stoppage time and both were clear yellow cards.
He’s off.
Newcastle will finish with 10 men in the rain. The silver lining is that the game has at most 90 seconds left in it.
Bazou Toure is isn’t the game and blazes deep into the left, cutting back for Wissa.
The Congolese forward takes his time with a touch, turning and hitting a low shot right into the frame of a splayed Pickford dead center of the goal.
He could’ve had Newcastle up 2-1 on his own.
Newcastle keep a loose ball alive with a header and a volleyed pass, and Ramsey snaps into a shot from 22 yards that has Pickford beaten but bends too much to miss the bottom right corner.
Schar has been quite good for the Magpies, who make two switches after the Swiss wins a free kick just outside the 18.
Veterans Jacob Murphy and Jacob Ramsey replace Joelinton and Elanga.
1-0 Everton into the 76th minute.
A seeing-eye cross from Steur is nearly pushed over the line by Anthony Elanga, but an odd spin works it away from the goal after perhaps touching the post and then Jordan Pickford’s hip.
Elanga actually mishit the ball, and it almost worked for a team which had not yet put a shot on target (and maybe still have not).
An ensuing corner comes to nothing.
HOW DID THAT NOT GO IN?! 🤯

A wild sequence ends with the ball spinning away from goal when it looked destined for the net!

Everton swing a corner to the far post and Jake O’Brien beats Harvey Barnes to the ball
The header is en route to the goal but Hornicek burst low to slap it out with his left hand.
Two subs for Newcastle as Willock and Gonzalez exit for Yoane Wissa and Sean Steur in the 64th minute.
Hornicek has been good this season but the ball squirts under him here and Newcastle want a review after Thierno Barry taps the ball over the line.
Tyrique George seems onside as he runs onto his shot, with Barry pursuing the ball and side-footing from maybe 1.5 feet away from the line.
Fabian Schar has gauze in his nose and is being treated by trainers. Barry got to his spot by swinging his arm into the Swiss players’ face.
VAR has no problem with that but they have the lines out for offside. Is Barry in front of the ball when George hits his shot?
No.
THIERNO BARRY WASN'T MISSING THAT ONE! 🫨

Lukáš Horníček saves Tyrique George's initial shot, but Barry is right there to tap in the rebound and put Everton ahead 👏

The back line was good for Newcastle, and left back Lewis Hall has joined Nico Gonzalez as being the club’s top players this early season (along, perhaps, was Harvey Barnes).
The rest is a bit of a mess and Everton are hoping to get the ball in space as much as they did in the first 45.
Harrison Armstrong has butchered a prime chance to make it 1-0 with the final kick of the first half, set up by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, which wil change some of the numbers below but...
Possession is about 50/50, though it doesn’t feel that way.
Shot attempts are 10-5 to Everton but neither team has put a shot on target.
xG favors Everton 0.92-0.21.
Harvey Barnes is a very Newcastle-spirited attacker and the winger works his way toward the arc for a hard shot.
The ball deflects off Jarrad Branthwaite and Pickford has to poke it over the bar for a corner.
Vitaliy Mykolenko’s half-clearance gets back to Anthony Elanga, who shanks it.
Nico Gonzalez is a game-controlling midfielder, and he’s basically doing parts of three midfielders’ job as a possessor, destroyer, and creator.
Joelinton is a chaos merchant and Joe Willock a more attacking version of that, and Everton are having trouble figuring out what to do with all the space available to them.
James Garner and Harrison Armstrong are a more conventional duo behind Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and they should see more time on the ball in more dangerous places as the game continues to develop up north.
At some point, Matthias Jaissle has to put a standardized midfielder with Gonzalez even if his options are young or imperfect. If Gonzalez isn’t there, the results seem to be a shot or a foul.
Everton are beginning to find more and more joy, and Newcastle’s supporters are getting audibly angry.
Oh, Everton should be ahead.
There are few players who’ve found more danger this season than Toffees forward Thierno Barry.
He’s on the doorstep again but his idea to snap a bounding ball past Lukas Hornicek is bungled off marker Will Osula.
Still 0-0 now into the 25th minute.
Dedic dances inside off the right flank and looks set to shoot with his left peg.
Yet it’s a pass to Joelinton, who might’ve been caught a bit off guard as he spins and hits toward goal.
It’s blocked out for a corner. The ensuing set piece is nodded just wide by an off-balance Dan Burn.
William Osula’s deflected shot/cross is awkwardly collected by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
The keeper’s outlet pass is too far for anyone, and all of the above feels an adequate first update in a few minutes.
This is energetic stuff, but too sloppy.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has an update on the status of Jack Grealish, who has now been left out of successive Everton’s squads as club discipline for missing an “unauthorized absence” from Toffees training. Ornstein says it’s a “complicated situation.”
“Sources with knowledge of the situation, speaking anonymously as they were not authorised to do so publicly, say Grealish is not fit ... It is unclear whether Grealish will return for Everton’s home game against Coventry City on Friday.”
Grealish did not travel with the team according to Orstein. The Premier League winner is on loan from Man City and Everton have a very thin squad so it would be surprising if there isn’t a quick resolution here one way or another.
Everton are underneath Newcastle on the table but David Moyes’ team is in his image and their lone losses this Premier League season have come against Arsenal and Chelsea.
They’ve come over the last two matchdays, but still....
Jaissle’s Magpies are the league’s worst team in expected points (7.4) and tied for 19th in expected goals (8.3). Expected goals against is closer to midtable but still poor.
After an abject display against Everton in the League Cup and with Malick Thiaw and a number of expensive summer signings on the bench, Jaissle needs a win and a performance at St. James’ Park.
