Newcastle United and Aston Villa will meet in Week 1 of the Premier League season and a 3-3 draw Sunday in both teams’ Summer Series debuts has further whet the appetite for that 12:30pm ET August 12 clash at St. James’ Park.
Villa led 2-0 and 3-2 but Unai Emery will be critical of lapses that allowed the Magpies to twice have the game level before controlling a good part of the second half.

Emiliano Buendia had two goals and an assist and could’ve had a hat trick on a day he was joined by Ollie Watkins on the Villa side of the score sheet.
Newcastle’s goals came from Elliot Anderson, Alexander Isak, and Callum Wilson, while new signing Harvey Barnes made his Magpies debut for the final 20 minutes.
The Magpies qualified for the UEFA Champions League last season thanks to impressive showings from Bruno Guimares, Sven Botman, and the rest of Eddie Howe’s Black and White Army, while Aston Villa’s also returning to European football and it looks to have all the weapons necessary to compete for the Europa Conference League crown.
ProSoccerTalk was on the scene at Lincoln Financial Field, with Nicholas Mendola providing sights, sounds, and updates from Newcastle vs Aston Villa.
The traveling fans for both of these historic Premier League sides will have wanted to see their team score, and both got their wishes.
A 3-3 split is pretty fair, with Newcastle probably wanting to note that neither Sven Botman nor Nick Pope were on the pitch when the Magpies went down 2-0.
But Villa will nod to Youri Tielemans’ being on the bench and Jacob Ramsey missing altogether as it built its lead.
Buendia was certainly the Man of the Match.
Harvey Barnes came so close to a goal on debut in front of a rabid Toon Army seated in the south end of Lincoln Financial Field.
Unfortunately for Barnes, Robin Olsen was able to corral his powerful shot. Barnes had raced to a long ball and had to beat teammate Anthony Gordon to it.
Newcastle has been heavy in possession for some time now, though Villa’s defended the final 10-12 yards very well.
Anthony Gordon has shown some danger, but it’s been Joelinton who is making his presence felt in the midfield (to the extent that Villa second-half sub Youri Tielemans has been starved of the ball).
Can we get a winner in the final 10-12 minutes?
The Toon Army was ready to salute Harvey Barnes after the Leicester import signed this weekend.
And it was right into the fray for the final 20 minutes for Newcastle’s new No. 15, who received quite the reception from the supporters in Philadelphia.
Much like the Fulham-Brentford affair, the match has gotten a bit sloppy with both teams making loads of substitutions.
In fact, the most interesting aspects of the past 10-12 minutes has been the growing annoyance from both players and fans with — we’re guessing — a perceived lack of consistency from the officials. There’s been a Bronx cheer or two on the night.
The Premier League Summer Series is up to 18 goals scored in 234 minutes of play, and the latest marker belongs to Callum Wilson.
The 31-year-old is coming off a career-best 18 Premier League goals but few will have been easier than his slotting of an Anthony Gordon rebound.
Wilson expected to be at the penalty spot moments later but the referee was well-positioned and must’ve seen something missed by the rest of the stadium.
Jaden Philogene fires past Dan Burn to a loose ball and a shot is palmed off the post by Karl Darlow.
It falls to Buendia, who is never going to miss inside the six with nothing in front of him but net.
3-2 Villa.
You’d have to say it’s a fair score line. Both teams showing flashes of brilliance but mostly looking very much in preseason.
A lot of aggression from the Villans but a couple lapses have allowed Newcastle to claw their way back from 2-0.
Surely loads of subs to come, including ex-Leicester players Youri Tielemans (Villa) and Harvey Barnes (Newcastle)?
The Magpies are back level!
It’s that man Anderson again, as the youngster drives deep into the Villa box to see his left-footed shot blocked into the air.
The ball bounces around in the box but falls to Alexander Isak. Villa would’ve wanted it to fall to just about anyone else. 2-2 and that’ll be the score at half.
And it’s the 20-year-old local who gets Newcastle back in the match.
Anderson and Alexander Isak are behind the Villa line to meet Jacob Murphy’s well-eyed diagonal, and Anderson rolls the ball underneath Emiliano Martinez to make it 2-1.
Unai Emery has Villa defending in a compact 4-4-2 as Newcastle looks to build out of the back in a 3-2-5.
The wings are pushed way wide, almost to the touch line, but Newcastle isn’t finding answers in trying to beat the back line with perfectly-timed runs.
If you’re a Villa fan, you’re seeing everything you want, and all of this with Diego Carlos, Youri Tielemans, and Pau Torres on the bench.
Emi Buendia adds a goal to go with his assist as the Argentine cooks Kieran Trippier to open up a lane and blasts the ball past Dubravka to the near post.
Both goals in front of the heavily black-and-white striped end of the pitch. It’s quieter now!
Sandro Tonali is a step slow and that’s all Emiliano Buendia needs to lead a charge into the Newcastle third.
Buendia draws multiple Magpies and slides the ball to Ollie Watkins, who makes no mistake in beating Martin Dubravka.
1-0 to Villa.
Harvey Barnes should make his debut tonight, according to Eddie Howe’s appearance with Rebecca Lowe, Robbie Earle, and Tim Howard.
The Magpies are buzzing and there’s a good number of Villans here but expect a pro-Newcastle atmosphere at the Linc as the Summer Series finishes its three-match run in Philadelphia.

It’s a strong XI for Villa as well, with Emi Martinez between the sticks and Ezra Konsa partnering Tyrone Mings at center back.
Villa fans will have to wait on the introductions of Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres, and Diego Carlos.

Harvey Barnes is on the bench for Newcastle, who starts former Aston Villa man Matt Targett at fullback.
Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak start, as does Sandro Tonali in a strong Magpies side.

There’s a familiar face gone in Ashley Young but Unai Emery’s got two big-time additions.
The Villans purchased Pau Torres from Emery’s former club, Villarreal, and also added Leicester City midfield star Youri Tielemans.
The Magpies formally sold Chris Wood to Forest and released Matty Longstaff, while Allan Saint-Maximin could be on the move to Saudi Arabia as the Magpies look not to run afoul of Financial Fair Play.
Newcastle’s purchased AC Milan star Sandro Tonali in a record outlay for an Italian player, while the club could soon announce the acquisition of Harvey Barnes from Leicester City.
