Leeds United and Manchester United played out a gripping 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Sunday, and it was a fair result.
MORE — Reaction from Man United boss Michael Carrick
Man United took the lead in the first half through Bryan Mbeumo’s fine finish but Dominic Calvert-Lewin finished early in the second half to grab a point for Leeds.
Neither team created much after Calvert-Lewin’s equalizer and Daniel Farke will perhaps be the happier manager as his side fought back for a point to keep their unbeaten run at home going.
As for Michael Carrick, his United side are now five games without a win in the league and have drawn 1-1 in three-straight games.
- After a slow start to the game, Man United took the lead through Bryan Mbeumo in the first half.
- But Michael Carrick will be angry his side conceded early in the second half to let Leeds back in it.
- Dominic Calvert-Lewin swept home after a header from a corner was knocked down to him.
- Both teams had half chances to win it, with Anton Stach going closest for Leeds and Bruno Fernandes for Man United, but neither could break through in the end and had to settled for a point.
- Man United changed their system a little and Tielemans, Baleba and Andrey Santos were decent in midfield as a trio as Carrick continues to tweak the balance. Fernandes and Mbeumo interchanged well from the left and up top.
- Looking at some of the key stats: Leeds had 12 shots with 5 on target, while United had 13 with 3 on target. United had 12 touches in the Leeds box, with Leeds having 21 in United’s box. Leeds were on top in terms of xG with 1.44 vs 0.91.
Harry Maguire, who had a decent game, has been speaking to Sky Sports.
He was asked about the togetherness and fight and if United showed that.
“You can’t question the togetherness, the spirit, the fight,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “It’s a tough place to come at the moment. Leeds have been flying in the league. We can be better. We know that. We’ve got to show a bit more quality with the ball, for sure. Then when you come to places like Leeds you can’t get beat on set players and we’ve conceded on a set play and it has got them back on the game.”
Maguire added that United felt comfortable in the new shape Carrick used for this game and he thought they limited Leeds to very few chances.
He added that Carrick worked on the system change this week and wanted to match Leeds up without the ball. “It was a bit of a five without the ball, four with the ball, really fluid in midfield.”
Maguire said they “knew they could get joy playing through the middle of the pitch and we’ve only been playing two midfielders in there.”
He added that United should have been a bit braver on the ball.
“We are in a situation at the moment where we are not as brave as we should be and we’ve got to get that back because to win football matches for Manchester United you’ve got to have that bravery and composure.”
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been chatting to TV cameras after the draw and Leeds’ goalscorer was asked if he enjoyed playing in that feisty derby.
“Yes and no, I think we could have played with a more quality in the final third,” Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports. “Particularly in the first half, we were getting good quality in the box but just not enough numbers. That was down to a small tweak and when we came out in the second half we made sure we came out with more confidence going forward. I think it showed and I think we were unlucky not to win the game.”
Calvert-Lewin said Leeds talked at half time about being more confident on the ball in attacking areas, and they certainly did that in the second half.
On his goal, Calvert-Lewin explained how it played out.
“I tried to cause a ruckus really and make it difficult for the defender,” Calvert-Lewin said. “As I jumped and read the flight of the ball, thankfully I’ve read it well and then I was just quickest to react and put it in the corner.”
Leeds are pushing for the win late on.
First a cross comes in and Mazraoui defends the situation well.
Then another cross comes in and Lammens’ punch doesn’t leave the box.
Stach’s low effort beats Lammens but Mazraoui is there again and United gather it.
Lukas Nmecha comes on for Noah Okafor to give Leeds an extra boost in attack.
Carlos Baleba is off for Man United with Mason Mount coming on in midfield.
That is a more attacking change from United and shows that Carrick is going for it.
15 minutes to go. Still 1-1.
Manchester United finally have a spell of possession in the second half.
Leny Yoro gets in down the right and pulls a brilliant cross back to Fernandes on the edge of the box.
He controls it well and unleashes a shot towards the far post which flies just wide.
Fernandes just dragged it a little, but that was much better from Man United.
What a week Lisandro Martinez has had, and now United are really missing him.
Martinez kicked off at United’s hierarchy after their defeat at Atletico Madrid in midweek.
He was then fined for his comments and started today.
But he only lasted 45 minutes and was hobbling around with an injury in the first half.
Mazraoui is on at center back but Leeds are whipping in crosses and going more direct and the Moroccan defender looks uncomfortable.
Michael Carrick will be fuming with his players, as Leeds equalize just six minutes into the second half.
A corner is knocked down and Harry Maguire can’t clear it.
Calvert-Lewin is there to smash it home and makes it 1-1.
Elland Road is rocking and Leeds are well on top now.
They look the more likely to win it. Whatever Daniel Farke said at half time worked a treat.

Leeds were solid and started well enough, but Man United gradually worked their way into this and deserve to lead.
Bryan Mbeumo had a couple of good chances but then buried his third and Youri Tielemans has been picking up some really dangerous positions getting forward from midfield ad Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes have been interchanging well.
Leeds are still in this and United have a habit of chucking away leads. But Daniel Farke will want to see more attacking intent and directness from his side.
So far the signs are promising for Man United, and Carrick’s change to a back three with wing backs is working well.
Manchester United are ahead as a lovely move down the right plays in the advancing Youri Tielemans.
He still has plenty to do but the Belgian magician picks out Mbeumo perfectly with his cross.
Mbeumo slides in and slots home to make it 1-0. Huge celebrations from the United players, Michael Carrick in the dugout and United’s fans in the away end.
Leeds look a bit stunned. Man United are ahead and that was coming after a couple of chances for Mbeumo.

Man United should be ahead as Youri Tielemans clips in a lovely cross for the unmarked Bryan Mbeumo.
He has so much space and time but powers his header the wrong side of the post.
Mbeumo can’t believe he hasn’t hit the target. He should have buried that.
Some big chances arriving for both teams now.

Really good save from Senne Lammens to deny Nico Elvedi.
A free kick is whipped in well from the right and Elvedi wins the header and nods it into the ground.
The ball skips up quickly but Lammens is all over it and saves well.
Michael Carrick has tweaked United’s system to match Leeds’ and it is working.
Amad Diallo is at right wing back and Diogo Dalot at left wing back. It’s a 3-4-3 with Bruno Fernandes playing up front as a false nine.
It’s brave from Carrick but it’s working.
Fernandes has been booked and is now walking a tightrope for the rest of this intense game.
Neither team have created a huge chance yet.

Lisandro Martinez starts after his outburst in midweek and United really need him, and the defenders alongside him, to put in a great display, cut out silly errors and stay solid.
The midfield trio of Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans are developing their partnership and start again, and that means Bruno Fernandes is shifted out wide again and this time it looks like he’s on the left after him playing on the right didn’t work well.
Bryan Mbeumo starts up top with Matheus Cunha, Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee on the bench and ready to make an impact if called upon.
Manchester United starting lineup
Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Santos, Baleba; Amad, Tielemans, Fernandes; Mbeumo
A very settled lineup for Leeds, because things are going very well and they are so solid.
Daniel Farke has named an unchanged lineup, and squad, from the defeat at Arsenal last weekend.
This 3-5-2 system has worked so well and Leeds are solid defensively and have a real threat out wide whipping in crosses for Calvert-Lewin and Okafor to attack.
Leeds starting lineup
Trafford; Justin, Elvedi, Muharemovic; Bogle, Stach, Ampadu, Tanaka, Gudmundsson; Calvert-Lewin, Okafor
Leeds host struggling Manchester United knowing they are the favorites to win this game against their bitter rivals.
Man United are all over the place and after their poor performance at home against Spurs last weekend they followed it up with a woeful display in their midweek loss at Atletico Madrid.
After that defeat Lisandro Martinez came out and attacked United’s hierarchy, in particular sporting director Jason Wilcox, and has since been fined by the club and has apologized for his actions. All is not well and Michael Carrick could really use a big win, and solid performance, to get United back on track as they search for a second league win of the campaign.
On the flip side Daniel Farke’s Leeds have been solid, reliable and tough to beat. Their first defeat of the season came at Arsenal last weekend as they led in the second half before succumbing to the Gunners’ quality late on.
For Leeds the fitness and form of Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front has been so important to the way they play. They have also been very good defensively and key summer signings James Trafford and Tarik Muharemovic have settled in really well.
Here’s the preview in full for you to enjoy before the match.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin: +475
Noah Okafor: +600
Bruno Fernandes: +800
Bryan Mbeumo: +900
These rivalry games between these two are usually very tight and this will be no different.
Leeds are in much better form and sit three points above Man United in the table heading into this game.
Daniel Farke’s side have lost just once this season and that was away at Arsenal last weekend after they took the lead. Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a real handful up top and Leeds have conceded just five goals.
Man United have won just once in the league this season and Michael Carrick is under serious pressure, especially after a tepid display in their defeat away at Atletico Madrid in midweek.
That said, this Man United side have a knack of pulling off a result when you least expect it and today feels like one of those days. If they can keep it tight at the back they have the individual quality to score.
Score prediction: Leeds 1-2 Manchester United
