Moorman will be the heavy favorite, but the Bills are serious about giving Powell a shot after he led the nation with a 47.0 average and finished second with a 41.2 net at Florida State last season.

A monster punter at 6'4" and 250 pounds, Powell led the nation with a 47.0 average at Florida State last season. In 14 preseason punts, Powell landed five inside the 20 and had four more fair catches. He’s taking over for veteran Brian Moorman.

Powell punted eight times in Thursday night’s loss to the Browns, averaging 45.5 yards per punt. He’s taking the fall as the Bills’ punt-coverage unit allowed Travis Benjamin to average 25.6 yards per return on seven tries. The Bills don’t play again for another nine days, so they have time to fill the spot.

Powell is filling in for Kevin Huber, who broke his jaw in Sunday’s loss to the Steelers. A two-year veteran, Powell was cut by the Bills following a rocky Week 5 performance.

Powell bounced between the Bills and Bengals in 2013, averaging 44.8 yards on 42 punts. We suspect the 25-year-old will pass through waivers unclaimed.
