Free agent OT Ryan O’Callaghan is reportedly contemplating retirement.
O’Callaghan has been absolutely destroyed by pass rushers in 20 career starts, and the 28-year-old former Patriots draft pick may be ready to put his Cal-Berkley degree to use. O’Callaghan spent all of last season on injured reserve.
  • Chiefs RT Ryan O’Callaghan will keep his starting job in 2010 after the team came out of the draft without an upgrade.
The Chiefs somewhat surprisingly passed on Russell Okung, so Branden Albert will be O’Callaghan’s bookend on the left. Though O’Callaghan wasn’t a difference maker individually, the Chiefs’ line played better when he cracked the lineup in Week 4 last year. At 6'7/330, he should be able to run block.
  • Patriots offensive tackle Nick Kaczur could be a surprise cut out of training camp, according to the Boston Herald.
Kaczur has struggled to stay healthy in his first two years and the Pats are high on second-year OT Ryan O’Callaghan. There are reportedly “whispers” in Foxborough that the team is disappointed in Kaczur’s work ethic and focus.
  • Nick Kaczur is the favorite to be New England’s right tackle again this year.
Kaczur may face competition from Wesley Britt and Ryan O’Callaghan, but has the most experience. There was talk in May that Kaczur could be cut.
  • Nick Kaczur has formally claimed New England’s starting right tackle job.
Ryan O’Callaghan may be the Pats’ strongest player according to Madden ’08, but Kaczur’s athleticism fits the team’s zone-blocking schemes better.
  • Chiefs claimed OT Ryan O’Callaghan off waivers from the Patriots.
O’Callaghan was good enough to start seven games for the Pats between ’06 and ’07, but missed all of 2008 with a shoulder injury. He’ll immediately push Damion McIntosh, Barry Richardson, and Ike Ndukwe at right tackle in K.C.
  • Patriots waived OT Ryan O’Callaghan and S/WR Ray Ventrone.
O’Callaghan didn’t have a bad camp, but second-round pick Sebastian Vollmer passed him to be New England’s No. 3 offensive tackle. O’Callaghan could probably start for the Chiefs right away. Ventrone was a special teamer.
  • Chiefs coach Todd Haley sounds like he may have finally found a right tackle he likes in Patriots castoff Ryan O’Callaghan.
“Our right tackle ... was a bright spot,” Haley said. “He showed some signs that he might want to stick around.” The team has listed four different starters at right tackle since training camp, and all have been pushed around.
