If Proehl leaves, his final catch will be a game-tying touchdown in the Super Bowl for the second time in 3 years. Proehl said he didn’t celebrate much after the catch because he knew the game wasn’t over.

Proehl’s hands and ability on third downs make him an especially good fit to replace Brian Finneran, who will miss the season with a torn ACL. Fellow free agents Az-Zahir Hakim and Kevin Johnson are reportedly interested in joining the Falcons as well.

Even as starter, Proehl doesn’t have much fantasy potential. The 15-year veteran caught two passes for 56 yards in week one.

It was his best day of the season by far. He’s much of a fantasy option.

Playing against the worst two pass defenses in the league, Proehl has gained 160 yards in the last two weeks. Don’t expect it to continue.

It’s unlikely he’d go to another team. If the Panthers sign Muhsin Muhammad, that would limit Proehl’s future even more.

Proehl is stepping down to spend more time watching his kids play college ball. While that excuse usually means someone was asked to leave, that likely is not the case here. Proehl has earned nothing but praise for his work in Carolina since joining the staff in 2011, and he reportedly is well liked and respected in the locker room. It would not be a surprise if he got back into coaching at some point in the future.

Proehl caught a three-yard touchdown from Chris Weinke in the final minute to seal the victory for Carolina. The veteran matched his season total entering the game with the five catches.

The 16-year veteran says it will definitely be his last season. With Muhsin Muhammad gone, the Panthers are happy to keep Ricky Proehl as their No. 3 receiver and mentor to starters Steve Smith and Keary Colbert. They may look to draft a wideout to develop with Proehl.

Proehl will remain a No. 3/4 receiver and return for his 16th season.
