2013 STANLEY CUP FINAL NOTES & QUOTES

Game 4

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 20, 2013 – NBC Sports Group continued its exclusive coverage of the Stanley Cup Final tonight with NHL Live on NBC Sports Network from 7-8 p.m. ET, followed by game coverage on NBC at 8 p.m. ET.

Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick (play-by-play), Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Emmy Award-winner Pierre McGuire (Inside-the-Glass analyst) called the game from TD Garden in Boston, Mass.

Russ Thaler and Anson Carter anchored NHL Live from NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn., from 7-7:30 p.m. ET, and were joined by Jeremy Roenick, who was on site in Boston.

At 7:30 p.m. ET, NHL Live moved to the TD Garden, and was hosted by Liam McHugh, who was joined by analysts Mike Milbury and Keith Jones.

NHL Live (7-8 p.m. ET)

Roenick on Bruins’ goaltender Tuukka Rask: “Tuukka Rask is one of those absolute, complete goaltenders. The confidence that he brings onto the ice, his competitive levels that he brings onto the ice is one of the best in the National Hockey League... The reason why the Boston Bruins are where they are, in the Final again, is because of Tuukka Rask.”

Roenick on Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews: “He’s one of the best captains in all of sports... He is a proud player and I would expect this to be his best game of the year. He has to be a difference tonight if Chicago’s going to stay and get back in the series.”

Carter on Bruins’ Zdeno Chara: “As Chara goes, the Boston Bruins go. He’s going to lead this team and he’s going to play well and everyone else is going to follow his lead.”

Milbury on Chicago’s power play: “My mother used to say, ‘If you don’t say something nice, don’t say anything.’ But she’s dead now so I can say whatever I want; in fact, so is the Chicago power play, as dead as a doornail.”

Game (8 p.m. ET)

Pre-Game

Emrick: “Superstars have to prove themselves anew.”

McHugh: “It’s not literally a must-win for Chicago, but they would be wise to treat it that way.”

First Period

McGuire: “Great start by Chicago. They definitely needed it.”

McGuire on Bruins’ power-play scorer Rich Peverley: “What a sequence for Rich Peverley.”

First Intermission

Milbury on Bruins’ goal: “Peverley of all people, who hasn’t scored in a month of Sundays, and all of a sudden it’s a 1-1 game. Lucky break for the Boston Bruins, but they’re back in it.”

Jones: “The momentum shifted in this game midway through that first period -- all Boston at the end of the period. The Hawks need to turn it around quickly.”

McGuire on Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews: “Nothing’s wrong with Jonathan Toews - he’s just a focal-point player that no one gives room to anymore.”

Second Period

Emrick on Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane: “He and Toews have broken out here in the second period.”

Olczyk on the Blackhawks: “Speed through the middle of the ice - such an important part of the success of the Chicago Blackhawks... Right now, the pace of this game is being dictated by the team in white.”

Emrick: “100 seconds to go in a wacky second period. Five goals have been scored by two of the best defensive teams in the playoffs... 50 seconds to go. With the rate of scoring this period, who’s to say there won’t be more?”

Second Intermission

Milbury: “There’s been so much about this series that’s been unexpected and this period has been another one.”

Jones: “If you’re a Hawks fan, you have to feel a lot better. Number one, you’re winning this game. Number two, Jonathan Toews scoring a big goal.”

Milbury on Blackhawks’ Bryan Bickell, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scoring: “This is the fourth time in their careers that they’ve scored in the same playoff game. They’ve never lost when that’s happened so, if you believe in omens, there’s one for you.”

McHugh: “As we head into the third period, both of those teams are really putting on a clinic on how not to sustain momentum, and really it’s just spectacular.”

Jones: “Just outstanding hockey for both teams. If you like goal-scoring and scoring chances, you’re getting a real treat tonight.”

Third Period

Olczyk on the Bruins’ game-tying (4-4): “You talk about never give up - good shift by [Jaromir] Jagr and [Patrice] Bergeron. They just win battles. They never give up on the play...”

Emrick: “This is marvelous... It’s all a matter of getting your name on the Stanley Cup and getting a ring that’s so large to wear.”

Emrick on the Bruins’ game-tying goal (5-5): This is the tenth goal. We had 12 in three games up till tonight.”

First Overtime Intermission

McHugh: “60 minutes of ice time simply not enough to settle things, and considering what we’ve witnessed here tonight, why would you want it to be?”

First Overtime

McGuire on Bruins’ 22-year old Torey Krug: “How about the confidence of young Krug in a one-on-one situation?... You can see the confidence of the young man out there.”

Emrick on Chicago tying the series 2-2 in overtime: “The series is even - a wacky overtime winning goal, a quick blast from the point.”

Post-Game

Roenick: “I’ve seen a lot of Stanley Cup Final games but nothing that had every aspect of excitement in one game. What a gutsy performance by the Chicago Blackhawks.”

Jones on Chicago: “I like the fact that they just kept pushing... They went for it... No shocker that it was a defenseman [Brent Seabrook] that jumped in and scored.”

Roenick on Blackhawks’ Coach Joel Quenneville changing the lines: “I was really impressed with watching Joel Quenneville coach that game tonight... He goes and puts Patrick Sharp on the left side with Kane and Toews... That was a great little mixup to add a little bit more dynamic offense to that line and it paid off for the Blackhawks in the end.”

Roenick on Blackhawks’ Michal Handzus: “I love how after whistles he got into people’s faces... He was a beast... He’s a multi-talented, multi-purpose player that seems to show up in big games and he showed up tonight in a big way.”

Roenick on Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford: “He is battling that mitt right now.”

Jones: “Chaotic game... I love the way Chicago brought it.”

Roenick: “The Chicago Blackhawks have now turned the tides and the momentum in this series.”
