Injury update on 2 notable Phillies: Seranthony Dominguez and Mickey Moniak

Relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez's long-awaited elbow surgery is scheduled for today. Things always could change in the COVID-19 world of 2020, but July 30 — today — is the scheduled date for the procedure.

Update: Dominguez underwent successful right elbow UCL reconstruction surgery, the Phillies announced at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Dominguez, 25, initially injured the ulna collateral ligament in his right elbow in June 2019. At first, Dominguez appeared headed for Tommy John surgery, but a second opinion led to a different course of treatment. Dominguez never made it back in 2019.

The Phillies hoped an offseason of rehabilitation would allow Dominguez to contribute in the bullpen this season, but the pitcher re-injured himself in March and could not immediately have surgery because of COVID-19 concerns. Barring a late development, he will finally have the procedure today. Orthopedist James Andrews is scheduled to perform the surgery.

Dominguez's injury will end up impacting three seasons as it will require at least a year of recovery.

Elsewhere, some have wondered why outfielder Mickey Moniak is not getting work with the Phillies' satellite squad in Lehigh Valley. He apparently has suffered an unspecified knee injury and is in Clearwater receiving treatment.
