After beginning his major-league career 0 for 8 with two walks, Mickey Moniak picked up his first big-league hit against Blue Jays right-hander A.J. Cole Friday night.
It was a line shot into right field, a solid first knock. It came in Moniak's second plate appearance in the second game of the Phillies-Jays doubleheader.
It was a big hit, too, because it brought the tying run to the plate and fellow rookie Rafael Marchan hit a three-run homer, the first of his professional career in 851 plate appearances.

Moniak debuted Wednesday and made his first start with the Phillies Thursday. His first two starts came in left field with his third in right field. Bryce Harper was the designated hitter in Game 2 Friday.
Moniak was the first overall pick in 2016. He did not hit his way here but the Phillies have had so many injuries lately that he got the call. The Phils would have had to add Moniak to the 40-man roster anyway this winter to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.
Right now, he has a very interesting opportunity and a chance to begin changing the conversation.

In 1,671 minor-league plate appearances, Moniak hit .256/.302/.390. His best season was 2019 at Double A Reading, where he hit .252 with 11 homers, 67 RBI and a .741 OPS.
