Hip issue for Realmuto at a critical point in Phillies' season

The Phillies pounded the Marlins Saturday night but they also took a beating themselves.

J.T. Realmuto left the game with hip discomfort.

Spencer Howard exited with shoulder stiffness

Rhys Hoskins' hand/wrist was bent back on a play at first base. He was able to stay in the game.

Zack Wheeler, originally slated to start Saturday, then Monday, was pushed back to the Mets series.

Other than that ...

The Realmuto injury is troubling given what is required of him. He is needed behind the plate and he plays there as much as any catcher in baseball. The Phillies have a doubleheader Sunday and it's possible Andrew Knapp will have to catch both games.

Manager Joe Girardi said utilityman Ronald Torreyes could be an option as a third catcher in a pinch.

Realmuto felt the hip discomfort while running to first base.

"Just have to see how he is tomorrow and keep our fingers crossed," Girardi said.

Knapp has been an uber-productive backup this season, hitting .371 and reaching base in 22 of 44 plate appearances. There's obviously a massive gap between Realmuto and Knapp, though, and the Phillies cannot afford to lose one of their best players during the stretch drive.

The schedule is unforgiving. The Phillies' next off-day is nearly two weeks away. They have 14 games in the next 11 days.
