NEW YORK — There were some on-field fireworks Monday night at Citi Field when Bryce Harper was ejected from the Phillies' dugout in the top of the fourth inning for arguing balls and strikes.
Home plate umpire Mark Carlson turned to the Phils' dugout and tossed Harper, prompting Harper and manager Gabe Kapler to run out and continue their argument demonstrably.
Harper apparently said something after a questionable called strike to Cesar Hernandez. The pitch was high and slightly out of the zone, and it came four at-bats after Harper was called out looking himself. One of the called strikes in Harper's at-bat was also out of the zone.
Somehow, Kapler was not ejected along with his superstar rightfielder. Kapler was in Carlson's face gesturing and protecting his player but avoided being tossed.
