Cesar Hernandez nursing strained hip flexor

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Another day, another injury in Phillies camp.

Starting second baseman Cesar Hernandez is nursing a strained hip flexor. Manager Gabe Kapler said it was a Grade 1 strain, which is mild. There is no timetable for Hernandez’ recovery, but the player does not believe it will impact his readiness for opening day, which is now one month away.

The injury occurred while Hernandez was running the bases on Monday.

“I feel better now than when it happened,” he said. “That’s a positive thing.

“If it’s up to me, I would go on the field tomorrow because I’m a competitive guy and like being out there. But I can’t really give you a timetable because maybe it’s one week, two weeks, three weeks. All I know is it’s mild and I’m very optimistic because the day after it happened, I was already feeling better.”

Hernandez is one of three Phillies position players nursing an injury. Odubel Herrera is recovering from a hamstring strain and Roman Quinn an oblique strain. Herrera should be good to go for opening day. Quinn might not have enough time to get ready for opening day. Ditto for reliever Tommy Hunter, who has a strained flexor in his right arm.
