Former Louisville and current Delaware 87ers guard Russ Smith set an NBA D-League record on Wednesday night.
Playing for the Sixers' affiliate against the Canton Charge, Smith scored 65 points to break the D-League's scoring record, passing former teammate Jordan McRae's 61-point mark from earlier this year.
Smith has been no stranger to flashy stat lines this season. The 6-foot-1 guard had a 20-point, 16-rebound, 13-assist triple-double on Friday and scored 50 points earlier in March. Smith averaged 26.3 points, 8.4 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 20 games prior to Wednesday.
But the former Louisville star took it to another level in Canton. In the 87ers' 140-129 loss, Smith made 24 of 42 shots and 16 of 20 free throws for the 65-point outburst. He made his mark inside the arc, making just one three on the evening. He also had six rebounds and four assists to go with the scoring output.
Smith, who played 15 games for the Grizzlies earlier this season, will have to hope his performance leads to a fate similar to McRae. McRae rode his 61-point performance (which also came against the Charge) to a 10-day contract with the Suns before earning a multi-year deal with the Cavaliers (see full story).
Here's the highlight of Smith's record-breaking basket.
