For the first time in his seven-year career, Malcolm Jenkins is a Pro Bowler.
Jenkins, originally selected as an alternate, tweeted Monday evening that he’s on his way to Hawaii for this weekend's Pro Bowl.
It wasn’t immediately clear who he’s replacing. Players from the Super Bowl teams don’t participate in the Pro Bowl, which is now the week before the Super Bowl, but neither the Broncos nor Panthers had a Pro Bowl safety.
Jenkins had two interceptions, including one off Tom Brady that he returned 99 yards for a touchdown, along with 10 pass breakups, three forced fumbles a fumble recovery and 92 solo tackles.
He and Fletcher Cox were the two most consistent players on a defense that was ranked in the top 10 halfway through the season before falling apart the second half of the year.
Jenkins is the first Eagles safety named to a Pro Bowl team since Quintin Mikell after the 2009 season.
Brian Dawkins was picked to seven between 1999 and 2008, and Michael Lewis was selected in 2004.
Jerry Norton (1957, 1958), Bill Bradley (1971-73) and Wes Hopkins (1985) have also been selected.
Jenkins is the fourth Eagle selected to this year’s Pro Bowl. Left tackle Jason Peters, punt returner Darren Sproles and defensive end Fletcher Cox also made the team, although Peters dropped out because of injuries.
Jenkins, a native of Piscataway, was the 14th player taken in the 2009 draft. After five seasons with the Saints, he signed with the Eagles after the 2013 season.
He’s the first Eagle since Sheldon Brown in 2005 and 2006 with INT returns for touchdowns in consecutive years and the first safety in franchise history to do it.
Jenkins, Cox and Connor Barwin are the only players to start all 32 games for the Eagles the last two years.
The 2016 Pro Bowl is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST Sunday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu.
