While the Eagles have already found their next defensive coordinator, they’re now starting to interview candidates for the offensive coordinator position under new head coach Nick Sirianni.
The Eagles on Sunday are going to interview Chargers OC Shane Steichen for the opening, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Steichen is one of two known candidates so far. The other is Denver running backs coach Curtis Modkins.

SIGN UP HERE Steichen, 35, has a very obvious connection to Sirianni. The two worked together with the Chargers from 2014-17 before Sirianni left to take the OC job under Frank Reich in Indianapolis. After Sirianni left, Steichen stayed with the Chargers and became their full-time offensive coordinator in 2020 after taking over as the interim in 2019.
But with a new coaching staff in Los Angeles, it appears that Steichen is now looking for a new gig.
Back in 2016, the Chargers shuffled their coaching staff and moved Sirianni from QBs to receivers coach so they could promote Steichen from quality control coach to quarterbacks. So these guys are very intertwined. (In Steichen’s first three years as the Chargers’ QBs coach, Philip Rivers went to the Pro Bowl three times.)
And after a report that Jonathan Gannon is going to be the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, it seems very possible that Sirianni’s offensive and defensive coordinators are both guys he’s worked with before. Back in 2016, the Eagles really had to help Doug Pederson put together his first staff but that isn’t the case here.
NFL
Sirianni has worked for a few different teams and several different staffs, so he’s more able to put together his own coaching staff.
Under Steichen and head coach Anthony Lynn, the Chargers had the No. 9 offense in the NFL, averaging 382.1 yards per game. They helped rookie QB Justin Herbert have a fantastic season, but a lot of that credit has gone to QBs coach Pep Hamilton. Steichen called plays in 2020.
Earlier this offseason, Steichen reportedly garnered some interest from the Seahawks about their new OC opening and it has also been reported that Steichen would be an internal option to stay with the Chargers. But the fact that he’s interviewing for this Eagles job makes it seem like that’s not the case.
