Nelson Agholor heading to Las Vegas Raiders

Former Eagles receiver Nelson Agholor has found a new home.

The 2015 Eagles first-round pick is heading to the Las Vegas Raiders, according to reports.

Agholor, 26, has signed a one-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

During his five years in Philadelphia, Agholor had what was certainly an up and down career. While his first couple seasons in Philly were a disappointment, he got better and in 2017 was a big piece of the Super Bowl team.

In 2017, as a third option behind Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, Agholor caught 62 passes for 768 yards and eight touchdowns. And in Super Bowl LII, Agholor had nine catches for 84 yards and had a few huge grabs down the stretch of that win.

But Agholor’s career in Philly was almost like a perfect bell curve. It started off slow, got much better and peaked in the Super Bowl and then hit a new low this past season when he struggled with dropped passes and injury.

The Eagles brought back Agholor on his fifth-year option in 2019 and paid him a salary of $9.4 million. He did not live up to that. He played in just 11 games because of injury and when he was on the field, he struggled. He had just 39 catches for 363 yards and three touchdowns last season.

It was very obvious that Agholor wasn’t going to return. He needed a fresh start and the Eagles were happy to let him go.

It always seemed like Agholor struggled with overthinking and when things got bad for him, they always seemed to spiral. It once got so bad back in 2016 that Doug Pederson benched him for a game sort of as a mental break. While there will be some national attention on the Raiders this season as they move to Las Vegas, it’s unlikely he’ll see the same kind of rabid fans that Philadelphia is full of. That should be a good thing.

In five seasons with the Eagles, Agholor had 224 catches for 2,515 yards and 18 touchdowns. Not awful numbers but certainly not what the Eagles anticipated when Chip Kelly took him at No. 20 out of USC back in 2015.
