Eagles practice squad tracker: Filling out the 16-man squad

The Eagles made a bunch of moves before Tuesday’s deadline to come up with their initial 53-man roster.

Now it’s time to figure out the practice squad.

Practice squads in 2022 can hold 16 players. We’ll be tracking all the additions here. The Eagles announced 15 players on Wednesday afternoon:

WR Devon Allen: The Eagles are bringing back their Olympic hurdler. Allen got off to a shaky start in training camp but that's probably to be expected for a 27-year-old guy who hadn't played football in 6 years. By the end of the summer, he started making some plays, especially in the preseason. He caught a 55-yard touchdown pass against the Browns and showed off ability as a gunner in Miami. With world-class speed, Allen is worth keeping around. 

WR Deon Cain: After a tremendous summer, fans were worried Cain would be claimed by another team. Didn't happen. Cain cleared waivers and is now coming back to the Eagles' practice squad. The 26-year-old has some NFL experience and could perhaps find himself playing for the Eagles at some point this season.

WR Britain Covey: The explosive return man never really got to show his goods in camp, but the Eagles think there's something there. Covey was a really fun player at Utah and flashed early in camp. There might be an opportunity for him to play some this season with a call-up. 

S Anthony Harris: The veteran safety and 2021 starter was a surprising cut just before the Eagles traded for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. But now Harris and his seven years of NFL experience will be on the practice squad.

S Andre Chachere: The special teams ace was at practice on Wednesday but was not practicing. He has a groin injury.

QB Reid Sinnett: Even though the Eagles claimed QB Ian Book from the Saints, they are reportedly bringing back Sinnett, who struggled this preseason. But the Eagles clearly liked something about Sinnett, who even took some second-team reps early in camp.

TE Noah Togiai: For a while, the former UDFA was making a strong roster push. But the Eagles elected to keep sixth-round pick Grant Calcaterra. The Eagles lost Togiai to a waiver claim a couple years ago, so they're probably pretty happy to get him back.

RB Kennedy Brooks: The UDFA from Oklahoma was with the Eagles throughout training camp and was at practice on Wednesday.

OL Kayode Awosika: The versatile tackle/guard who has been with the Eagles since last year didn't make the 53-man roster but sticks around on the practice squad.

LB Christian Elliss: The Eagles really liked Elliss, who missed significant time with a hamstring injury. He was waived but returned to practice on the P-squad on Wednesday.

DT Marvin Wilson: The 2021 UDFA from Florida State had a really good training camp but was released in a numbers crunch.

OT Le'Raven Clark: The Eagles' third-string left tackle is probably still Clark, who remains with the team in some capacity ... at least for now.

C Cameron Tom: The 27-year-old center is 6-foot-4, 300 pounds. He can act as the Eagles’ third center while on the practice squad. Tom has played in 13 career games with 1 start in his career with the Saints and Dolphins.

CB Mario Goodrich: The UDFA from Clemson didn’t make the roster, while fellow UDFA cornerback Josh Jobe did. But Goodrich had some good moments in training camp and the Eagles liked him enough to give him $217,000 guaranteed in his initial contract. 

RB La’Mical Perine: The 2020 fourth-round pick out of Florida was cut by the Jets. The 24-year-old has played in 14 games; he has 72 carries for 263 yards (3.7) and 2 touchdowns. (Via his agency.)

*DE Matt Leo: The 30-year-old former Australian plumber came to the Eagles from the NFL's International Player Pathway program and still gets a practice squad exemption. So the Eagles really get to keep 17 players on their practice squad. Howie Roseman casually mentioned that Leo would be their 70th player (53+16+1) just after final cuts. He was at practice Wednesday.
