Sirianni: Hurts has improved most in this area

Nick Sirianni didn’t name Jalen Hurts the Eagles’ starter until after training camp ended but there was never really any question.

Hurts took every snap with the first-team offense this training camp, which not only served to show us all he’s the starter but also gave Sirianni plenty of time to evaluate the Eagles’ 23-year-old quarterback.

On the latest Takeoff with John Clark podcast, Sirianni was asked to name the one area where he saw the most growth from Hurts since he began working with him.

“I think just his ability to process the offense and his decision making,” Sirianni said to Clark. “That he’s sitting in the pocket a little bit more and making the throws on time. When the plays come to him, he can run and make something happen. I just have seen a guy that truly lives to the motto of, hey, here’s our five core values. We want to get better at those each day and he does. Because he loves it and it’s important to him and he works relentlessly to get better at them.

“I’ve seen him do that and I’ve seen him make improvements in every part of his game. It’s the decision making, it’s his accuracy, it’s his footwork. And, again, the thing that really stands out is his comfort with the offense and his ability to run the offense. I think that’s what you want as a coach, for them to know everything you know as a coach, because he’s our coach out there on the field. I’ve definitely seen that improvement in his game and that’s vital for any head coach, play caller, quarterback relationship.”

Hurts showed flashes last season during his rookie season, but it was clear that he still needed to improve as a passer. We all know he can run but it’s about becoming more than that while still possessing that ability.

Earlier this summer, Sirianni said they don’t like to mess with their quarterbacks' throwing mechanics, but instead focus on footwork. In fact, Sirianni said this summer that he and his coaching staff are “obsessed” with fundamentals with a quarterback’s feet.
