Josh McDaniels has had some significant ups and downs during his time in the NFL. Lunch Break takes a look at his resume as the Eagles look to hire a new head coach.
The Eagles wrapped up their lengthy interview with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Sunday night and since then, the signs have been adding up that McDaniels is the favorite to get this job.
Of course, the Eagles’ search has been extensive and it’s worth noting that they’re interviewing yet another candidate on Tuesday, so it’s not a done deal.
But it’s hard to ignore all the signs that point to McDaniels.

Here’s another one:
According to SI.com’s Albert Breer, “the Eagles are doing extensive background” on McDaniels.
While the Eagles always do their homework on prospective coaching hires, the fact that they’re extensively looking into McDaniels shows how serious they are. And there’s likely a lot they want to find out about McDaniels, who comes with an … interesting resume. The Eagles want to find out all they can on the 44-year-old, who has been a longtime OC and former head coach.
And, by the way, our own John Clark says McDaniels is “a focus” for the Eagles even as interviews continue.
Here’s what else Breer had to say about McDaniels as the Eagles continue to focus on him:
“That doesn’t mean he’s getting the job, but I do believe that Jeffrey Lurie and Howie Roseman are intrigued with what McDaniels might be able to do, and he’s an easy answer to a question they’re trying to confront: Which available coach is best equipped to build an offense that works for our quarterback(s)? I also believe this one can work because Roseman and McDaniels have different strengths.
NFL
“Where they’d have to bridge gaps would be in how the organization would set up structurally, since both guys have a very defined vision for that. But I think, in a certain way, both guys here could be really good for each other, if everyone is reasonable. I also think that Roseman’s experience, and belief that his job first and foremost is to go and get players for the coaches, borne of his experience with Andy Reid, would go a long way in melding coaching and scouting, if McDaniels is the guy.”
That’s one of the main things the Eagles have to figure out: Can McDaniels and Roseman work well together? Roseman obviously clashed with Chip Kelly and there were reports that Roseman and Doug Pederson decreasingly saw eye to eye as Pederson’s tenure went on. The Eagles always talk about making sure the front office, coaching staff and scouting department are on the same page but that’s not easy to do. And they have to figure out if the visions and personalities blend.
Another side note from this SI report: Breer mentions that Colts secondary coach Jonathan Gannon could end up in Philly if McDaniels gets the job. But with the news that Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni is interviewing for Eagles’ the head coaching job, it’s probably even more of a reason to keep an eye on Gannon.
