Former MLB reliever Pedro Feliciano passed away at the age of 45, reports Eduardo Perez of ESPN.
Terrible news. According to Perez, Feliciano was jet skiing with his family on Sunday before passing away in his sleep. He was diagnosed with a rare genetic heart condition in 2013, but it’s unclear if that factored into his passing. Feliciano is best known for his time with the Mets, including a run between 2006-2010 in which he posted a 3.09 ERA over 408 appearances. He’s the last player in MLB to surpass 90 appearances in a season, which he did in 2010. His incredible workload earned him the nickname “Perpetual Pedro.” Feliciano was never quite the same after that, as shoulder issues limited him to just 25 appearances for the remainder of his career, which included an ill-fated stint with the Yankees. Still, he’ll always be remembered fondly by Mets fans. Rest in peace Pedro and our thoughts to the Feliciano family.

The Yankees have revealed that Pedro Feliciano underwent rotator cuff surgery on September 8.
Hindsight being 20/20, the Yankees now wish Feliciano would have just undergone the procedure at the beginning of the year. Now he’s missed all of this season and would seem to be in danger of sitting out all of 2012, as well. It appears the Yanks will get zero return on investment from the two-year, $8 million deal they inked the lefty reliever to last offseason.

It’s just a procedural move. Feliciano underwent rotator cuff surgery in early September and is in line to miss a significant chunk of the 2012 season. This, after sitting out all of this year with shoulder problems.

The Yankees are expecting Pedro Feliciano (shoulder) to be available for a September call-up.
Feliciano was recently cleared for a rehab assignment with the Yankees’ Gulf Coast League affiliate, and is expected to serve as a low-leverage option when healthy. He hasn’t pitched since signing a two-year, $8 million contract last offseason. His $4.5 million option in 2013 will be declined.

Feliciano is currently working his way back from rotator cuff surgery last September. While it’s nice to hear he’s finally making progress, he still has a long road ahead of him. The 35-year-old southpaw has yet to throw a pitch for the Bombers since signing a two-year, $8 million contract.

Feliciano, who was signed to a free agent deal by the Yankees before the 2011 season, has yet to appear in a game with his new club. He is getting much closer though, and struck out three in a scoreless inning on Friday. He’s likely to return to the Bombers bullpen near the end of August, and will provided welcomed depth.

Feliciano has a 2.84 ERA and 8/3 K/BB ratio in 6 1/3 innings over seven rehab appearances between rookie ball, High-A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He is likely just days away from finally joining the Yankees’ bullpen.
