Russian president Vladimir Putin called the Sochi 2014 Winter Games the “best Winter Olympics in history” in his New Year’s address Wednesday, according to Russia’s Sputnik News Agency.
“Only a few years ago, the Sochi Olympics was considered a dream,” Putin said, according to the report. “But not only did it come true, not only did we prepare for and host the best Winter Olympics in history, but came out the victors.
“All of our citizens, including our Olympic athletes and those who supported them deserve credit for this victory.”
Russia led the Sochi medal standings with 33 total and 13 golds, up from its disappointing totals of 15 total and three golds in 2010.
