Olympic all-around silver medalist Viktoria Komova, who has dealt with injury and illness since London 2012, will miss her second straight World Championships, according to Russia’s R-Sport, citing Russia’s national team coach.
Komova, 19, has most recently been set back by an ankle injury.
The Russian team, with Komova, won silver behind the U.S. at the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympics. There was no team event at the 2013 World Championships, but there is one at next month’s Worlds in Nanning, China.
In 2011, Komova led Jordyn Wieber going into the rotation in the all-around at the World Championships in Tokyo. But Wieber came back to win by .033.
In 2012, Komova had the highest score in Olympic all-around qualifying in London. Gabby Douglas beat her by .259 in the all-around final to become the third straight U.S. woman to win the most coveted title in gymnastics.
Without Komova, Russia will be led by Olympic and World all-around bronze medalist Aliya Mustafina. Mustafina won the World all-around title in 2010.
The reigning World all-around gold and silver medalists, Simone Biles and Kyla Ross, will lead the U.S. team.
