Olympic all-around silver medalist Viktoria Komova of Russia has retired due to back problems at age 21, Russian national team coach Valentina Rodionenko said, according to R-Sport.
Later, Komova’s father confirmed that Komova was no longer training but said she had not retired, according to Russian news agency TASS.
The reports follow a social media post from Komova’s account saying she had stopped training due to back pain.
Komova, who took all-around silver behind Jordyn Wieber at the 2011 World Championships (by .33 of a point, squandering a lead going into the final rotation) and Gabby Douglas at the 2012 Olympics, has endured health problems since the London Games.
She missed the 2013 and 2014 Worlds and came back last year, but did not compete in the 2015 Worlds all-around. Still, Komova shared the World uneven bars title with three other gymnasts.
With her, the Russian team finished a disappointing fourth at the 2015 Worlds.
Komova was named to a preliminary Russia Olympic team in December.
