Usain Bolt had an eventful Thursday, being confirmed for his first race of 2017, saying he’s “50-50" on racing in 2018 and nearly getting kicked by a horse in Melbourne.
Bolt will race in Australia for the first time in his career in early February, according to Australian reports. Competing at the Nitro Summer Series in Melbourne would mark his earliest start to a season in a decade.
Bolt also reaffirmed his last race would be at the 2017 World Championships, but immediately after saying that, he left the door open to competing at the April 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
“A lot of people are saying I should, because I love Australia so much, I should come for the Commonwealths,” Bolt said in a TV interview. “It’s a 50-50 now, but definitely this [2017] will be my last world championships for sure. ... There’s a possibility. Let’s see how this season ends. If I end the season on a positive with no injuries, then it will be easier for me to get into the other season. And Commonwealth will be early [in the year], that will be a good thing. So even if I train and go to the Commonwealth and then retire, it’ll work out. So we’ll see.”
Lastly, Bolt avoided potentially being knocked out by a horse while attending Oaks Day, a thoroughbred racing event.
