Pool play was a lot cozier than 2012, but the United States men’s volleyball team has escaped to the knockout rounds again.

After a 4-1 run through Pool B in 2012, the Americans needed to beat Mexico on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals.

That wasn’t much of a problem against winless Mexico. The Yanks edged the Mexicans in the first set, 25-23, but then dominated the second to win 25-11. USA took the third set 25-19.

The win moves the U.S. record to 3-2. Despite its 0-2 start, Team USa could finish as high as second in Pool A.

The knockout rounds begin Wednesday.
