Nico Hernandez earned his country a medal in light flyweight for the first time in nearly three decades.
Team USA’s Hernandez, 20, may’ve fallen to Uzbekistan fighter Hasanboy Dusmastov 3-0 on Friday, but will still win bronze at Rio 2016. Both losing semifinalists take bronze at the Olympics.
Hernandez beat Italy’s Manuel Cappai 3-0 on Saturday, then taking Russia’s Vasilii Egorov by the same score on Monday. He then beat Carlos Quipo Pilataxi of Ecuador to set up Friday’s bout.
It's been 28 years since a light flyweight won a medal. NICO HERNANDEZ JUST CHANGED THAT. #Rio2016 pic.twitter.com/T3mXbIax7i
