Tokyo 2020 supporters make bid for world record for hat throwing (photo)

Hat throwing

Close to 1,200 participants throw their hats into the air inside a hanger, in an attempt to set a world record, as an All Nippon Airways’ Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane (R) and a Japan Airlines’ Boeing 777 plane are pictured in the background, at an event to promote the city’s bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games, at Haneda airport in Tokyo August 25, 2013. The challenge event, organised by the Tokyo 2020 Bid Committee, ANA, JAL and Japan Airport Terminal Co., was held to aim for an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people throwing hats simultaneously. The 2020 Olympic bid cities appear to be playing a can-you-top-this game with two weeks until the International Olympic Committee vote.

Last week, Madrid 2020 announced it lined up sports superstars Pau Gasol, Rafael Nadal, Cristiano Ronaldo (who isn’t Spanish but plays for Real Madrid) and Miguel Indurain in a video to promote its bid to the IOC.

Tokyo saw that and raised it a world-record attempt. Some 1,200 people gathered at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport. The record they aimed to gain in the Guinness Book of World Records was for the most people throwing hats simultaneously, according to Reuters.

The host city of the 2020 Olympics will be determined by an IOC vote on Sept. 7 in Buenos Aires. Madrid, Tokyo and Istanbul are the finalists.

Also at the airport was this goodwill message made up of people toward all three cities:
