Two-time U.S. Olympic runner Steve Scott was diagnosed with prostate cancer, 20 years after beating testicular cancer.
Scott was 10th in the 1984 Olympic 1500m and fifth in the same race in 1988. He broke the U.S. mile record in 1982, running it in 3 minutes, 47.69 seconds, a mark that stood until Alan Webb broke it in 2007.
Scott, 58 and a coach at Cal State San Marcos, was diagnosed in June, according to The Associated Press, which reported his doctor saying his prognosis was good to excellent.
“Luckily we found it early,” Scott said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “It hadn’t spread, or at least they don’t think it has.”
