Sochi relay torchbearer catches fire from Olympic flame (video)

Olympic torch relay

Greek actress Ino Menegaki, playing the role of high priestess, raises an Olympic torch of the Sochi 2014 Winter Games during a handover ceremony at the Panathenean stadium in Athens October 5, 2013. The flame that will burn at next year’s Sochi Winter Olympics was handed over to Russia on Saturday in the marble stadium that hosted the first modern Games in 1896. After a six-day trek across 33 towns in Greece’s mainly mountainous northern regions, the flame that was lit last Sunday by the sun’s rays at the birthplace of the ancient Games in Olympia was presented to Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak. A retired Russian Olympic bobsledder’s sleeve caught fire while he carried a torch during the Olympic torch relay in Siberia.

The Russian website lifenews.ru posted video of part of the Olympic flame falling from two-time Olympian Pyotr Makarchuk‘s torch and onto his sleeve.

Most of his left arm, covered in a jacket, went ablaze as he waved to a crowd with his right arm.

Agence France-Presse recapped the episode:

Russia’s Interfax news agency said that Makarchuk was left unhurt by the apparent leak.

“An assistant quickly put out the fire and gave the athlete a new uniform,” the news agency wrote from snow-covered Abakan.

“After that, the (cauldron lighting) ceremony continued,” the report said.

Makarchuk, 41, placed eighth in the 2002 Olympic four-man bobsled event and 15th in the two-man. He also took ninth in the four-man at the 2006 Olympics.

This is not the first time the Olympic torch relay participant has caught fire.
