Montreal has been provisionally selected to hosted the 2017 World Gymnastics Championships at its 1976 Olympic Stadium.
It will mark the first gymnastics Worlds held in North America since Anaheim hosted in 2003.
In 1976, the Olympic Stadium hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and track and field, including gold medals won by Bruce Jenner (decathlon), Edwin Moses (400m hurdles) and Lasse Viren (5000m, 10,000m).
The 1976 Olympic gymnastics competition, highlighted by Nadia Comaneci, was held at the famous Forum, the longtime home of the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens demolished in 1998.
The 2015 World Gymnastics Championships will be in Glasgow, Scotland. There are no World Championships in 2016. The 2018 World Championships will be in Doha, Qatar, since no other cities put forth bids.
Canada owns one Olympic or World Championships artistic gymnastics gold medal -- Kyle Shewfelt‘s floor exercise title at Athens 2004.
International Gymnastics Federation president to retire after 20 years
