McKayla Maroney throws acrobatic ceremonial first pitch (video)

McKayla Maroney

Olympic champion gymnast McKayla Maroney showed off her versatility, throwing a different kind of ceremonial first pitch at a Chicago White Sox game on Friday night.

Maroney, who hasn’t competed this year after March knee surgery, performed a cartwheel and a front flip, which took her just about to the outer dirt circle around the batter’s area. She then threw an easy toss to her catcher.

Now, don’t mistake the acrobatics for fear of bouncing the ball to home plate.

In September 2012, Maroney and Olympic teammates Gabby Douglas and Kyla Ross threw first pitches at a Dodgers game. Maroney was the only one of the trio to step back to the pitcher’s mound for her toss, and she easily made it to home plate.
