Mitcham says in a book to be released on Monday, Nov. 19, 2012 he battled a methamphetamine addiction in 2011 that almost derailed his career and his life, but the 2008 Beijing gold medalist will be free to compete on future Australian Olympic teams. Matthew Mitcham, the only non-Chinese diver to win gold at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, has retired, according to Diving Australia.

In Beijing, Mitcham came from behind on his final dive, the highest-scoring dive in Olympic history, to top China’s Zhou Luxin.

Mitcham was eliminated in the semifinals at London 2012, finishing 13th overall.

He failed to qualify for the 2015 World Championships.

“I have achieved everything I hoped for, including the big three -- Olympic Gold in 2008, world No. 1 in 2010, and Commonwealth Gold in 2014 -- which could never have happened without all the help I’ve had along the way,” he said, according to the Australian Associated Press.
