Keenan Robinson, the longtime strength and conditioning coach for Michael Phelps and other Olympians, found a new role with USA Swimming in Phelps’ retirement.
Robinson was announced as the organization’s National Team High Performance Director on Thursday. It’s a newly created position.
“Key aspects of Robinson’s role include the management of USA Swimming’s High Performance staffing at key competitions and camps; overseeing the organization’s Sports Medicine and Science Network; providing individualized National Team coach and athlete support; and managing the competition and performance support at a variety of domestic and international events,” USA Swimming said in a press release.
Robinson didn’t know anything about swimming when he first met Phelps at the University of Michigan between the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, coach Bob Bowman has said. Robinson worked with baseball and football players previously.
Robinson has since become USA Swimming’s head athletic trainer at the last two Olympics, plus had roles at other major meets.
