Spain race walker to tie record for Olympic track and field appearances

Race walker Jesus Angel Garcia, 46, was named to Spain’s Olympic team and is slated to compete at a seventh Olympics in Rio, tying the record for a track and field athlete, according to the IAAF.

Sprinter Merlene Ottey holds the record of seven appearances. She won nine Olympic medals (none gold) from 1980 through 2000, running for Jamaica, and concluded her Olympic career at Athens 2004 with Slovenia at age 44.

The overall Olympic appearances record is 10, held by Canadian equestrian Ian Millar, who still competes at age 68.

Garcia debuted in Barcelona 1992 and has competed in every Olympic 50km race walk since with a best finish of fourth at Beijing 2008.

Garcia was ninth in the event at the World Championships on Aug. 29.

Miguel Angel Lopez, who on the 20km race walk at Worlds, was also named to the Spanish Olympic team, according to the IAAF. Rio will be his second Olympics.
