Romanian weightlifter Gabriel Sîncrăian could be stripped of his Olympic bronze medal two months after earning it after it was revealed that he failed a drug test.

Sîncrăian, an 85kg lifter who took Romania’s single weightlifting medal in Rio, failed a test for excessive testosterone, according to the International Weightlifting Federation.

The federation, which did not say when Sîncrăian failed the test, has not made a final decision on sanctions relating to his Rio bronze medal.

The fourth-place finisher, Kazakhstan’s Denis Ulanov, could be upgraded to bronze behind gold medalist Kianoush Rostami of Iran and silver medalist Tian Tao of China. No Americans qualified to compete in the 85kg in Rio.

Sîncrăian previously served a two-year doping ban from 2013 to 2015 after testing positive for the banned steroid stanozolol.
