“Foxcatcher” and “Unbroken,” two films about U.S. Olympians, received a combined eight Oscar nominations Thursday morning, including Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for “Foxcatcher.”
Steve Carell (Best Actor) and Mark Ruffalo (Best Supporting Actor) received nominations for “Foxcatcher,” based on the murder of 1984 Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Dave Schultz. Carell played paranoid schizophrenic John du Pont, who murdered Dave Schultz, played by Ruffalo.
“Foxcatcher” was also nominated for Best Director (Bennett Miller), Original Screenplay and Makeup and Hair Styling.
“Foxcatcher” and “Interstellar” had the most nominations (five) of all films not nominated for Best Picture.
“Foxcatcher” also earned Best Drama, Best Actor (Carell) and Best Supporting Actor (Ruffalo) nominations for the Golden Globes but did not win any of the three.
“Unbroken,” about 1936 Olympic 5000m runner turned war hero Louis Zamperini, was nominated for Oscars for Cinematography, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.
