There were high hopes that Brittany Bowe and/or Heather Richardson would give the U.S. women’s speed skating program its first medal since an all-time best run in 2002, but that didn’t happen in the 1000m on Thursday. Instead, China’s Zhang Hong won a gold medal with a time of 1:14.02.
The Netherlands filled up the rest of the podium as Ireen Wuest grabbed silver at 1:14.69 and Margot Boer brought in bronze thanks to a 1:14.90 mark.
Fellow Dutch skater Margot Boer finished third, winning another medal for the Netherlands.
Richardson finished in seventh place (1.21 away from gold) and Bowe came in eighth (1.45 behind). They’ll get another shot at breaking that post-Salt Lake City slump in the 1500m.
