World champion Brianna Rollins was upset in the 100m hurdles at the Drake Relays, losing by .005 of a second to American Kristi Castlin among closely contested high-profile events Saturday.
Castlin, who has never made an outdoor World Championships or Olympic team, and Rollins ran matching 12.58-second races. Castlin got the win with times extended to thousandths of a second -- 12.571 to 12.576 -- with the fastest time in the world this year. It marked Rollins’ first loss in almost two years.
A U.S. team that included Olympic champion Aries Merritt won the shuttle hurdles relay in 53.77, just .06 ahead of a Jamaican team with Olympic bronze medalist Hansle Parchment.
2008 Olympian Tiffany Ross Williams won the 400m hurdles in 55.53 over Jamaican Nickiesha Wilson (55.68) and 2012 Olympic silver medalist Lashinda Demus (55.97).
In the field events, French Olympic champion and world record holder Renaud Lavillenie took the pole vault.
Three-time Olympian Chaunte Lowe won the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.96m, while Olympic silver medalist Brigetta Barrett settled for fourth.
