Three cyclists hit the pavement in a scary crash at the World Road Cycling Championships in Spain on Sunday, set off by a Dutch woman colliding with a fence, her bike flying across the road and other cyclists’ wheel running onto her.
Annemiek van Vleuten was leading the Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team to a potential podium finish in the final stretch of the 22-mile race when she hit the barrier.
The next two cyclists on her team, trailing right behind her, couldn’t avoid van Vleuten as she fell. They both hit her and fell, too.
Reports say Anna van der Breggen got the worst of the crash, breaking her pelvis. Both she and van Vleuten were taken to a hospital, according to VeloNews.
Interestingly, the world’s greatest women’s cyclist, Marianne Vos was also part of the Rabo Liv team in the race, but she was dropped from the group before the crash.
