Carli Lloyd the soccer player and Carli Lloyd the volleyball player were both named to the U.S. Olympic team on Tuesday.
“People always talk about her when they hear my name, so I feel like she’s in my daily life,” Lloyd the volleyball player said in 2015, according to TeamUSA.org. “You spell it the same, and it’s like yeah, but I don’t know her at all. I’ve watched her success and she is such a baller. I’m awful at soccer. I don’t really even understand the sport that well. But I watch her fire and it’s cool.”
In Rio, they will become the seventh set of U.S. Olympians with the same name to compete at a single Games, Olympic historian Bill Mallon said.

Mallon also noted that in 1976, Terry Porter competed in track and field at the Montreal Games and Terry Porter competed in cross-country skiing at the Innsbruck Winter Games.
Internationally, perhaps the best known case of same-name Olympians was Chinese short track speed skaters Yang Yang (A) and Yang Yang (S), who were on the same team in 1998 and 2002, with the parentheticals used to differentiate them.
