Bob Bowman and David Marsh were named head coaches of the 2016 U.S. Olympic swimming team Wednesday.
Bowman, who has coached Michael Phelps to a record 22 Olympic medals, will coach the U.S. men’s team in Rio.
Marsh, who has coached Ryan Lochte since 2013, will coach the women.
U.S. Olympic swim coaches’ tasks include presiding over relay team roster decisions at the Games.
“We can be a lot better,” Bowman said of the relays Wednesday. “We need to develop some people.”
The U.S. won two of the six Olympic relays at the World Championships in August and failed to qualify for the final in the men’s 4x100m freestyle.
It’s the first Olympic head coaching assignment for both Bowman and Marsh. They’ve both been head coaches at World Championships and assistant coaches at the Olympics.
In 2012, the U.S. Olympic head coaches were Gregg Troy (then Lochte’s coach) and Teri McKeever, who coached Missy Franklin at the University of California.
In 2004 and 2008, longtime Texas coach Eddie Reese led the U.S. Olympic men’s swim team. Georgia’s Jack Bauerle coached the women in 2008. USC’s Mark Schubert coached the women in 2004.
