Olympic decathlon champion Ashton Eaton‘s signature was printed on his high school track in Bend, Ore., as Mountain View High School dedicated the surface to the world-record holder Wednesday.
“I received this honor not as one person, but on behalf of everyone and everything that made me who I am,” Eaton said in a speech, standing on a platform on the track’s infield. “If I have done anything to deserve this recognition, it was simply giving my best towards something that I love, an effort that we are capable of.”
Eaton signed autographs and ran a lap on the track with kids. He’s scheduled to open his decathlon season at the Hypo Meeting in Gotzis, Austria, on May 30.
“It’s interesting to have your name tied to something with a lot of permanence,” Eaton said of Ashton Eaton Track in a press conference. “I ran a lot of laps here.”
