Ashton Eaton is ‘College GameDay’ guest picker, beats Oregon Duck in hurdles

Ashton Eaton

The world’s greatest athlete went head to head the Oregon Duck mascot on “College GameDay” in Eugene on Saturday morning. The result of their hurdles race wasn’t all too surprising.

Olympic decathlon champion and world record holder Ashton Eaton became the latest U.S. Olympian to be the guest picker on ESPN’s college football preview show. Last year, Ryan Lochte and Lolo Jones were guest pickers.

Eaton handled himself very well, not only in his mini race with the duck, but also with his picks. He tapped Texas over TCU because fellow Olympic decathlete Trey Hardee was a Longhorn.

He picked Missouri over South Carolina because, he said, the person who presented him with the Bowerman Award -- college track and field’s Heisman -- in 2010 went to Missouri.

Eaton also joked he would bet his gold medal that unranked San Diego State would defeat No. 17 Fresno State.

The GameDay crew noted the fact that Eaton and his wife, Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton, the World Championships silver medalist in the heptathlon, could produce pretty strong athletic children.

“We have stacks of letters of intent already,” Eaton joked.
