With Carlos Balderas Jr. having advanced during the morning session of men’s boxing, Nico Hernandez made sure the United States boxing team remained undefeated on the first day of competition.

Competing in the light flyweight division, Hernandez beat Italy’s Maunel Cappai by unanimous decision, with judge Rakhymzhan Rysbayev scoring the bout 30-27 and Clemente Carillo and Ming Li Liu both scoring the bout 29-28 in the American’s favor.

Both Carillo and Liu judged the first round 10-9 in Cappai’s favor, with Rysbayev scoring the round 10-9 for Hernandez.

Next up for Hernandez is Vasilii Egorov of Russia in the Round of 16, with that match scheduled for Monday evening. Egorov won two medals in international competitions in 2015, earning gold at the European championships and silver at the world championships.
