Athletes from every track and field discipline -- even discus throwers -- will compete in a groundbreaking 8x100m mixed-nation, mixed-gender relay at the Youth Olympics on Tuesday.
Eight randomly selected athletes will make up each team. For instance, an American male sprinter could pass a baton to a Chinese female hammer thrower.
The event, with over 500 athletes taking part, will happen outside the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center stadium and on a track on the streets near the Olympic Village.
“I haven’t done any special training,” Irish discus thrower Eoin Sheridan said, according to Olympic.org. “But I think it’s a good idea.”
