The Edmonton Oilers have announced that forward Ales Hemsky is unlikely to return to action this season.
Hemsky, 29, was playing with a broken bone in his foot when the Oilers decided to temporarily shut him down in mid-April.
After the club was officially eliminated from the playoffs last night (and with just four games left in the regular season), head coach Ralph Krueger said it was “not planned” for Hemsky to return.
Hemsky signed a two-year, $10 million deal at the end of last season, one that will keep him in Edmonton through the 2013-14 campaign.
That said, it’ll be interesting to see what his future has in store.
The Oilers sounded like a team looking to make a move last week when GM Steve Tambellini was replaced by Craig MacTavish, saying they were prepared to do “bold things” to improve.
As such, Hemsky has been tagged as possible trade bait.
The Czech winger has a ton of skill and can be an effective scorer when healthy. He’s missed 114 games over the last four seasons but racked up 120 points in the 176 games he did play.
