TSN’s Darren Dreger is reporting that the Dallas Stars have inked defenseman Aaron Rome to a three-year, $4.5 million contract.
That’s certainly a fair bit of money to spend on a guy who has played in just 148 NHL games over the last three seasons. It’s also just another signing by today’s standards.
Rome is a defensive defenseman who spent the last three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. However, it’s unlikely that the Canucks’ organization was too upset to see him go, given that they didn’t even offer him a contract extension.
Of course, Rome is most famous for his hit on Nathan Horton during the 2011 Stanley Cup finals. The NHL suspended for the final four games of the playoffs as a result and the Boston Bruins outscored the Canucks 21-4 after that hit.
Rome will probably end up as part of the Stars’ third pairing and might even slip to the role of seventh defenseman.
