Cowboys signed Mississippi State EDGE Tyrus Wheat.
Wheat (6’2/263) was a 200-pound hybrid linebacker/safety entering Copiah-Lincoln Community College before transferring to Mississippi State. Upon arriving in Starkville, Wheat logged 66 percent of his snaps on the edge while dropping to off-ball linebacker in certain alignments under DC star Zach Arnett. Wheat led MSU in both TFL and sacks every year on campus, earning Second-Team All-ACC status in 2022. Though a bit sawed-off compared to the prototype edge defender, he wowed Shrine Bowl attendees with his jarring hands and inability to be dislodged once planted in run defense. He’s got a pretty swift get-off and brings an intensity in pursuit that is reflected in his respectable 7.18 RAS, but his rushes tend to stall out if his first move doesn’t land. His scheme versatility should keep Wheat employed at the NFL level.
