Panthers signed fourth-round WR Ryne Robinson to a four-year, $2.103 million contract. The deal includes a $438,305 signing bonus.
The Panthers hope Robinson, a quick but smallish Miami of Ohio product, will revive their return game so Steve Smith and Chris Gamble can focus on their respective duties. Robinson caught 90 passes as a senior Redhawk but doesn’t project to develop into more than a slot receiver down the road.
  • CAR Wide Receiver
Fourth-round rookie WR Ryne Robinson is making a name for himself in training camp.
“I’m anxious to watch him play,” coach John Fox said. “He’s got suddenness, he’s got excellent hands.” The Panthers are probably too deep at WR for Robinson to make a fantasy impact this season outside of deep dynasty leagues.

The Gaston Gazette believes Keary Colbert will start in Week 1.
Drew Carter led Carolina in receiving on Friday, but his dropped passes could cost him the opening-day gig. The paper expects either Dwayne Jarrett or Ryne Robinson to be the fourth receiver, with Taye Biddle No. 6.
  • CAR Running Back
Panthers RB Nick Goings was the first-team kick returner for a second straight week on Friday.
Goings was working ahead of Ryne Robinson, who will still return punts. A strong preseason by Alex Haynes has made the writing on the wall very obvious for Eric Shelton.
  • CAR Wide Receiver
Ryne Robinson is still the leading candidate to return punts and kicks for the Panthers this season.
Rookies Sherrod Martin, Captain Munnerlyn and Larry Beavers could battle for the job during training camp, but it’s probably Robinson’s to lose. He handled the duties for the Panthers in 2007 before hurting his knee last summer.
  • CAR Wide Receiver
Panthers WR/KR Ryne Robinson is in danger of not making the team.
Robinson, the club’s fourth-round pick in 2007, lost his punt return job to upstart rookie Captain Munnerlyn. Mike Goodson will return kicks. Robinson offers nothing as a receiver, so he likely won’t be on the final 53.
  • CAR Wide Receiver
    Panthers waived WR/KR Ryne Robinson.
The writing was on the wall after he lost punt return duties to rookie Captain Munnerlyn. He’ll be on several teams watch lists as an emergency option.
  • FA Defensive Back #26
Rookie CB Captain Munnerlyn may have nailed down starting punt return duties after a return of 58 yards before barely stepping out at the Dolphins 25 Saturday night.
Although Munnerlyn did fumble one, he recovered it before the Dolphins could. This is not good news for Ryne Robinson, who is on the roster bubble.
  • CAR Wide Receiver
Panthers PR Ryne Robinson’s MRI revealed sprained MCL and PCL ligaments in his left knee.
That’s typically a three- to four-week injury, so Robinson could be back in time for the season opener. The team is using receiver Jason Carter and cornerback Darren Toney on punt returns for now.
  • CAR Wide Receiver
Panthers coach John Fox upgraded PR Ryne Robinson (knee) from “week to week” to “day to day.”
Robinson had a limited practice on Wednesday and might play Sunday, but he’s a safer bet to be back in Week 3. Mark Jones is currently on punt returns.
